"The Lady" leaves the Lilac City. The 1938-vintage steam locomotive, the 700, crosses the Latah Bridge westbound out of Spokane on Oct. 22, 2002. The historic engine and cars were returning to Portland after a rail excursion in Montana earlier this month. Rail enthusiasts chased the train all the way to Cheney before losing the race as the engine easily hit 58 miles an hour.

One of Spokane's most recognizable landmarks, the Clocktower in Riverfront Park, has been standing for 100 years. The Clocktower was originally built in 1902 as part of the Great Northern (Railway) Depot. It was the most modern building in Spokane at the time, boasting nearly 100 electric lights. The depot surrounding the Clocktower was torn down in the early 1970s when the area was revamped for the 1974 World's Fair. This photo dates back to the 1930s.
