Education: Graduated from Central Valley High School in 1971 and from Washington State University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Studied history working toward a master’s at Eastern Washington, Whitworth and Gonzaga universities but did not complete a degree.
Work experience: Worked as a history teacher, geography teacher and athletic director for the Central Valley School District for 20 years, before retiring in 1995. Previously invested in several properties and offered high-risk, short-term loans to people buying properties. Has worked as a historical researcher and co-authored a book with his wife about a couple that was murdered in Montana.
Political experience: Ran unsuccessfully for the state Legislature as a Democrat against the late Sen. Bob McCaslin in 2004 and Rep. Matt Shea in 2008. Spent a decade on the Spokane County Library board of trustees and served as chairman and vice chairman of the board. Has been a Democratic Party precinct officer since 1992.
Family: Married to Becky Hattenburg. Has three children and three grandchildren.
Fundraising: Has raised more than $16,300 as of Sept. 26. Notable donors include Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels, the Washington Education Association’s political action committee, the pipefitters union, the Teamsters, the Washington State Democratic Central Committee, the Washington Education Association's political action committee, the Warren G. Magnuson Democratic Club, philanthropists Don Barbieri and Sharon Smith, former Spokane Valley City Councilman Dean Grafos, the Democratic Party’s political action committee for the 4th Legislative District and Lisa Brown, a Spokane mayoral candidate who formerly served as majority leader of the Washington Senate.
