Van Every was appointed to a vacant seat on the Rockford city council in 2013. He resigned that position on July 12, citing a family emergency that may force him to move out of state. He stated his intention to withdraw from the race, but his name will still appear on the primary ballot since it was printed weeks ago.

A flash of light and loud noise seen and heard in the morning skies of Eastern Washington this morning probably was a meteor, a government agency said.
