Political experience: Has served in the House of Representatives in the 9th District since 2007. He previously served on the Washington Barley Commission and the National Barley Improvement Committee in the 1990s.
Family: Married to Kim Schmick.
Campaign finance: Raised more than $229,000 as of Oct. 2, 2024, according to the state Public Disclosure Commission. Contributors include the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, Premera Blue Cross, Delta Dental of Washington, Washington State Tree Fruit Association Political Action Committee, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, BNSF Railway, Anheuser-Busch, and Avista Corp.

Past runs for office include: 9th Legislative District representative, Adams County Commissioner, Mayor of Ritzville, 4th District U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.
Work experience: Retired. Most recently had a trucking company. Served in the Coast Guard. Has worked with International Harvester, been a commercial fisherman and owned body shops, to name a few of many jobs.

Solidly Republican, this district has no Democrats on the legislative ballot, although Rep. Joe Schmick, of Colfax, faces an intraparty challenge from Glen Stockwell, who has run unsuccessfully under the GOP and Democratic banners in previous years. It’s a rematch of sorts: Both ran in 1996 but didn’t make it past the primary.
Costly study didn’t list Pine Lodge for closure
OLYMPIA – Last year, the Legislature spent $500,000 for a consultant to tell Washington state which prisons should close and which should stay open. The consultant released his study in November, and the Pine Lodge Corrections Center for Women in Medical Lake wasn’t on the list. Instead, he recommended it stay open to handle female prisoners on the east side of the state.
