KHQ: Is Valley Chapel Road too skinny for cyclists?

A popular cycling route south of Spokane got the attention of KHQ last night, after a resident along the road said she didn't think the road was big enough for bicycles.

"I don't want to kill anybody," said Cindie Smith, who lives near Valley Chapel Road in Valleyford, stating the obvious for anyone who isn't a natural born killer.

Still, her concern for cyclists - and she says she has nothing against riders - stems from the lack of shoulder, lane or other amenities that make cycling safe.

But, like the reporter states, no road is off limits for bikes (except I-90 and North Division, which is technically a highway for a while). Which means we share the road, no matter how skinny.

I've ridden the fantastic loop of the Palouse Highway to Valley Chapel Road to Hangman Valley Road to Hatch Road and home. It's great, and I see little chance that cyclists will stop riding such a great route so close to home.

Any thoughts? Should skinny roads be off-limits to cyclists? Or do skinny roads mean we all should be more wary of who else is on the road?
