Meet Mandolyn
First of all, there really was a Fannie.
Mandolyn Hume, proprietor of Fannie’s Ice Pops, named her Spokane business in honor of her great-grandmother, who had a small farm in Oregon.
Hume started selling her ice pops at farmers markets and community events last year. She makes them herself using organic cane syrup and fruit from local farmers markets. She buys organic and local as much as possible and comes up with all kinds of creative flavor combinations. You won’t find Red Dye No. 40 or high-fructose corn syrup in her ice pops. Get to know Hume better in the next Spokesman-Review Food section. She's the centerpiece cover story.
Also, find a few recipes for beersicles, or homemade popsicles made with beer. This refresher isn't for kids. There are recipes for Guinness, apricot wheat ale, watermelon ale, framboise and kriek lambic, lager and more.
This week’s Just Picked feature spotlights sweet, white Japanese turnips. And, as always, look for food-related tidbits in Fresh Sheet.
Cheers!
