Today is the longest day as far as I’m concerned

A GRIP ON SPORTS • Keep this under your baseball cap. It’s National Doughnut Day. And I won’t be having one. Read on.

• Sorry to destroy your image of me as an obese, Jabba-the-Hutt-like figure sitting in his mom’s basement writing blog posts. Yes, that image was pretty spot on a few months ago – other than the mom part – but I’ve been working diligently to change it. Which means – and this is really hard to write – no doughnuts for a while. Or ice cream. Or candy bars. Or popcorn. Or any other snack for that matter. Like an athlete with a big event coming up, I’m eating three healthy meals a day and nothing else. Nothing. And by healthy I don’t mean cheese pizza instead of my usual meat-stuffed variety. I mean vegetables, lots of vegetables. Fruit, lean meats, that sort of stuff. The type of diet they give you after you’ve suffered a major health malfunction. Except I’m doing it before the malfunction, hoping to forestall it as long as I can. So as you bite into you maple bar or crumb doughnut or, God I wish I could have one of these, cinnamon coffee roll, think of me. Maybe even tear off a little corner and put it aside as if I were there. For Vince, you can say under your breath. I would appreciate it.
• I did watch a bit of the NBA Finals’ first game last night and I was struck by two impressions. LeBron James is really, really good. And the Warriors are the better team. When Golden State sticks to what they are best at offensively – sharing the ball and working to get each other open shots – they are basically un-guardable. Just watch the overtime in last nights's 108-100 Golden State win. And when James wants to score, he’s almost impossible to stop. But one guy, no matter how good he is, won’t be able to beat a team playing together as one.

• WSU: New baseball coach Marty Lees was introduced yesterday, with Bill Moos saying he “got my guy.” With Jacob Thorpe away, Sean Kramer filled in and has this story. ... Jacob did put together a morning post with some links. ... Jon Wilner re-envisions the all-Pac-12 basketball team for next season. ... ESPN.com’s Pac-12 blog has a look at WSU’s non-conference schedule and a peek at the conference’s recruiting.
• Shock: Not only do the Shock have to travel to San Jose to face the best team in the AFL tonight, now three of the players are under investigation for theft following a recent game in Las Vegas. Tom Clouse has the story on the latter incident.
• Seahawks: This just may be the deepest Seahawk roster of the Pete Carroll era. Don’t take my word for it. Take Carroll’s. ... Yes, everyone recognizes Jimmy Graham is going to be a big deal. ... The Hawks made some front-office adjustments yesterday.
• Mariners: Really, the M’s are tough to like right now. Or follow. Not only did they lose 2-1 to Erasmo Ramirez and the Tampa Bay Rays last night (really, Erasmo Ramirez?), they also made the dumbest move they could make, roster-wise, following the Mark Trumbo deal. Instead of letting Rickie Weeks or Dustin Ackley go, they dump Justin Ruggiano, the one decent outfielder they have on the bench. Make that had. Now it’s Weeks or Ackley into the breach if there’s a late-inning change needed. ... Dave Boling wants to know who picked the M’s to be any good. They have to have their baseball-expert card revoked.
• Sounders: It will be a beat-up Sounders group playing in Kansas City tomorrow, especially up front. But no matter who has played recently, they’ve found a way to score.

• I look up and see the little calendar in the corner of the computer. It says Friday. Again. And it’s going to get hot. Great. I’m looking forward to taking my shirt off and showing off my new svelte body. In about five months. ... By the way, if you want to caption the Ramirez photo above, you can in the comments. Mine would be: "Thank goodness I get to face the Mariners' lineup now. That will take a couple runs off my ERA." ... Until later ...
