GU hangs on, 66-63

Manny Arop had a career-high 15 points, Elias Harris a season-high 19 and Steven Gray led with 20 as Gonzaga held off Marquette 66-63 in the third-place game at the CBE Classic.

Gonzaga led 42-33 at half and the margin stayed roughly the same for most of a sloppily played second half. GU led by 11 with 7 minutes left and by 8 with 3:53 left, but the Zags couldn’t put Marquette away.

The Golden Eagles pulled within 63-60 on Jimmy Butler’s three-point play with 1:58 left. Gray made two free throws with 49.3 seconds left to give GU a five-point lead, but Butler drained a 3-pointer on an inbound play.

Gray made 1 of 2 foul shots with 12.6 seconds left to make it 66-63. Marquette had a shot at a tying 3, but Butler's shot from 35 feet was off target.

More in about two hours.
