Cougs up 41-18 at half
After a sloppy start, Washington State settled into a groove in its season opener and held Southern without a field for 15 minutes of the first half to take a 41-18 lead over Southern into halftime at Beasley Coliseum. Playing without point guard Reggie Moore, out indefinitely with a left wrist injury, the Cougars got 13 points from Klay Thompson while big man Brock Motum, starting in place of DeAngelo Casto, had eight points. The Jaguars started 3 of 4 from the field but missed all but one of their next 20 field-goal attempts. They shot 23 percent in the first half and made 1 of 13 3-point attempts.
