Nevada piles up 844 yards vs. Idaho

Robb Akey has always been expressive -- it doesn't matter if the Vandals win or lose. But this evening, in a small room full of reporters, the coach was even more energetic and candid than usual after the most lopsided loss of the year. You can read some of his comments in my game story here. And check below for much more.

Some of the best comments from Akey are in my story. Like these:

  • Asked by a TV reporter how it felt to give up that many yards, he said, “Well, do you have a beep button on that camera? If you really want to hear what I think, it’s going to be filled with a lot of words that shouldn’t be put on the six o’clock news.”
  • And after he crumped the stat sheet and threw it to the ground, he said: "We can’t change one thing about all this. Can’t change it." Later he added. “I wadded up those stats. I’m not going to wad up the season."

But Akey had lots more to say, including comments on the crowd that thinned out in the second half.

"Well, I’m sure the sky is falling down just about everywhere right now," he said. "I noticed there weren’t many people in here for the second half of this game. But you know what? None of those people are going to make any plays. None of those people are going to be at practice tomorrow. None of those people are going to be in the training room getting there bodies feeling again."

Switching gears to the Boise State game next week, he noted, "I will promise you a win in the rival game and all the sudden that sky, it bounced off the ground and went up again."

To end his postgame conference, he told reporters, "I would recommend you all be here on Friday night."

Here's more from Vandal players:

NATHAN ENDERLE

On team's frame of mind: "It’s kind of tough to tell right after the game. I think we’ll get a better picture of how everybody’s feeling tomorrow when we meet and watch film and see what went wrong."

On mistakes: "I thought it was a story of just things happening at the wrong time. We had a couple turnovers at big moments. We executed on and off on offense and defense."

On bouncing back: "I think we have to be mentally tough. I guess some people realize that we can still make a lot of noise this season. We can still do a lot of things. ... We’ve tasted success. We know what it takes. We’ve just to perform."

On his rushing TD, just the third of his career: "You know, it was weird. It’s not something I normally get. I don’t think No. 10 on the other team (Kaepernick) had (a touchdown on the ground). No one would have bet that."

SHILOH KEO

On how he feels after a loss like this, "Heartbroke. I’ve been here for five years, and this game meant a lot to me because this is a team I’ve never been able to beat."

On Kaepernick: "He’s one of the best quarterbacks that I’ve played against. ... He’s an X-factor out there. He’s like a Michael Vick."

On preparing for BSU: " We’ve got to have a lot of heart and passion put into practice … We’ve got to study film day and night. This is the best team we’ll play this season, hands down."

On the Vandals' confidence with all the injuries: "I don’t think the confidence is wavering at all. I see younger players making little mistakes that the veterans wouldn’t be … But we trust everybody. We all have the same expectations that we had at the beginning of the year."

KAMA BAILEY

On positives team can take: "As a team, it may not look like it, but you could see that we were not giving up. We had a bunch of mistakes, but we weren’t giving up. That’s what we can take out of it."

On his fumble on the kickoff return: "That was all on me. As running backs, we alway talk about ball security. That’s what we stress day in and day out. I should have had that ball high and tight. We call it Vandal Vice. ..It could have been a big way but it wasn’t."
