COUGARS

• Washington State was picked last, but it wasn't unanimous. With 32 voters, WSU received 35 points, so somebody or somebodies picked the Cougars to finish out of the cellar. USC received 28 first-place votes and led the poll – a seventh-consecutive year - with 316 points. Cal was second (three first-place votes) and UW ninth, which jives with our thoughts. • The rules meeting was quite quiet, as there are no big changes this year. Most of the emphasis is administrative, things like the chinstrap added to the facemask penalty. So not much to pass on. New commissioner Larry Scott was in attendance, sitting between Jeff Tedford and Mike Stoops.
