Bulldogs win WCC opener
It was short on style points -- and points on the scoreboard, for that matter -- but the Gonzaga Bulldogs finally put Portland away in the last five minutes and posted a 67-50 victory Saturday in the WCC opener for both teams.
Gonzaga (10-4) won its second straight, this one in business-like fashion. GU led by as many as 12 in the first half before settling for a 34-26 edge at intermission. The margin remained in the 8-12 range until Matt Bouldin scored back-to-back buckets near the 5-minute mark. A Josh Heytvelt dunk and Jeremy Pargo's two free throws hiked Gonzaga's lead to 60-42.
Bouldin (14 points), Heytvelt (14), Steven Gray (13) and Pargo (12) reached double figures for the Bulldogs, who made 43.1 percent from the field (after being in the upper 30s for most of the game) and 85 percent at the foul line (17 of 20). The Pilots (9-7) were led by Jared Stohl's 10 points. Nik Raivio, younger brother of former Bulldog Derek Raivio, had 9 points on 3-of-12 shooting. The Pilots shot 32.7 percent from the floor.
