Zags pull away from Eastern

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team used a huge second half to pull away from Eastern Washington 87-61 victory Tuesday evening at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Bulldogs, up just four at halftime, outscored the Eagles 52-30 in the second half.

All five starters contributed as the Zags scored on their first six possessions for a 12-0 lead. Eastern didn't score until its ninth possession. After the lead got to 18 at 22-4, the Eagles flew back, using 12 straight points in a 17-2 run for a 29-28 lead before the Bulldogs scored seven points in the last minute to go up 35-31 at halftime.

Senior Heather Bowman was led GU with 22. Sophomore Katelan Redmon added 17. Junior Courtney Vandersloot, currently first in the nation in assists per game at 10.2, handed out 14 assists, to go with 13 points, her fourth-straight double-double. Vivian Frieson and Tiffany Shives both chipped in 11 points.

Eastern Washington was led by reserve Chene Cooper with 14 points. Julie Piper who added a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards and Jessica Huntington had 10 points.
