A home in the 7200 block of east Sixth was destroyed by fire early this morning. Spokane Valley Fire Department crews were dispatched at 4:12 a.m. A neighbor heard a popping noise, went outside and saw flames through a window in the home, said assistant fire marshal Bill Clifford.

The 53-year-old man living in the home was able to escape with minor injuries. Firefighters rescued two dogs and a cat is missing. Another cat died in the fire, Clifford said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The home is a total loss. "It was totally gutted," said Clifford.

The resident did not have renters insurance and the homeowner did not have insurance either, he said. The Red Cross is assisting the resident. Photo courtesy the Spokane Valley Fire Department.
