The Slice

By the time I got to Phoenix

1. Heard quite a few people say "Zags" today and all pronounced it correctly. That must mean we are approaching something momentous.

2. All you need to do to understand why the Southwest covets the Northwest's water is fly over Arizona.

3. What are the chances that a little boy in a cartoon Tasmanian Devil cap seated between Dan Pelle and myself on the Spokane-to-Denver leg would turn out to be a well-behaved kid perfectly capable of entertaining himself?

4. It's impossible to escape the conclusion that a lot of people in Spokane would enjoy this sweat-box climate. Of course, they might miss the lakes.

5. Seconds after we got off the plane at Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport, a voice several gates away could be heard shouting "Go, Zags!" And it didn't seem strange in the least.

6. Several people were monitoring tweets that indicated the GU team left Spokane after we did and got to Phoenix before we did. But no one seemed to begrudge them the private plane.

7. Something tells me Phoenix's water conservation efforts aren't going to magically turn the growing city in the desert into a sustainable proposition.
