The Slice

Religion and college basketball fandom

Some might suggest the questions I am about to ask are inappropriate. And yet I am unmoved.

Here goes.

Do Mormons in Spokane root for BYU when GU plays the Utah school?

Do Catholics in the Salt Lake City area (I'm assuming there are a few) root for Gonzaga when the Zags play BYU?

Do atheist basketball fans always root against church-affiliated schools?

What if two church schools are playing each other?

Does being an alum of either GU or BYU trump all other considerations?

What if you were a student at one school but now work at the other?

What if you are a graduate of one school but your kid attends the other?

If you are hostile toward Catholics or Mormons, is that reflected in your rooting interest?

If you are not religious now but grew up in a church-going household, do you root for schools affiliated with your childhood faith? Do you root against those schools?

Do you have even the slightest idea about the religion of the players? The referees?
