Recalling a cold weather reporter
"The Thing From Another World" (1951) was just on TCM.
Maybe you are familiar with this Howard Hawks movie. The action is set at a military outpost/research station near the North Pole.
For reasons that aren't altogether clear, there's a newspaper reporter on the scene. He stumbles onto a remarkable story (see title).
Let's assess the Ned Scott character's performance as a journalist.
Good: He's pretty cynical, but in a fairly clever way.
Bad: He faints during a heated encounter with The Thing.
Versatile: He acts as his own photographer.
Great: When he finally gets the chance to file his story, via a radio connection with Anchorage, he does so off the top of his head. No notes. No nothing. He just spits it out. Modern journalists might quibble with his prose. But how many of them have reported on beings coming here from outer space?
