The Slice

Sometimes it’s not really racism

There was a Slice item in January of 1997 that I sometimes remember in winter.

A local woman told about how her husband, who had moved here from New York, was baffled and dismayed by a racist remark he heard over and over. He kept hearing warnings to "Watch out for black guys on the freeway," she recalled.

In time, he realized that people were actually saying "black ice."
