The Slice

Greatest line ever?

Reading about the ESPN layoffs reminded me of a scene in 1987's "Broadcast News."

In that film, the Washington, D.C., bureau of a network TV news operation is undergoing a brutal round of layoffs.

One of the individuals being jettisoned is seen leaving an executive's office.

The executive escorting him out the door feigns a give-a-shit expression and says, "Now if there is anything I can do, anything at all, be sure to let me know."

The older guy who has just been cast off looks at the executive and says, "Well, I certainly hope you'll die soon."

Then he walks away, smiling.

I've loved that scene for 30 years.
