The Slice

Found behind the wall

Got an email from John Gross, who has noted The Slice's reports on things found behind the wall in people's homes.

"My house is a 1912 bungalow that needed a lot of work when I bought it in the last century. I found a copy of the Winnipeg Free Press from August 28, 1956 and copy of the Spokane Daily Chronicle form September 9, 1951. A lot of red scare news on the front page of the Chronicle from Korea and eastern Europe. The front page also reports a car stolen from Second and Washington, recovered a block away but without the license plates. Deeper there is a report, with address, of a 12 foot pole bean. A pineapple strike ended after workers got a 7 cent hourly raise. There were a lot more movie theaters at the time than there are now, including at least three drive-ins.

"Front page of the Free Press reports that three men in a raft reached Falmouth, England 87 days after leaving Halifax, Nova Scotia.

"I also found this card in the wall. See attached.

"I've been wondering why I've been saving this stuff. Thanks for clearing that up for me."

The dated photo was inside a card from the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas.
