The Slice

“Out of town newspapers”

Are you old enough to recall when that expression suggested something slightly exotic?

Oh, sure. Newspapers might not be where you typically turned for excitement. But there was something about dailies from other cities.

Their pages were not filled with the same old cast of characters you knew all too well in your hometown. The headlines didn't seem to say "More of the same, for God's sake."

Well, the Internet pretty much kicked the stuffing out of the notion that newsstands offered a special glimpse of the world beyond the horizon.

But back in the day, out of town newspapers could be a window on a grass-is-greener world.

The way they felt, looked and smelled seemed to speak of possibilities that kept pace with your imagination.

A lot of times, they were yesterday's edition. But that was OK. Sometimes news wasn't the only reason to buy a paper.
