There are several reasons why I like Steve Heaps.

For one thing, if I ever pose a question inviting readers to wonder about the practice of athletes citing divine intervention for their victories, I can count on Steve to speak up and ask "What about when they lose?"

He is also a valued Slice contributor because he sends me thoughtful observations. One of his categories might be headed "People often don't know what they are talking about."

Here's an example, from May 21, 2009.

Steve Heaps wondered if the Centennial Trail was about to veer unexpectedly through a rainforest.

You see, a couple of women had just warned about a "boa constrictor" up ahead of him.

"But then I saw the 2-foot-long bull snake sunning himself as I ran by," he wrote.
