The Slice

Paul’s People, No. 6

If I tried to pick up Chloe as Kelly is doing here, it would not go well.
If I tried to pick up Chloe as Kelly is doing here, it would not go well.

You know how I am always mentioning my neighbor's cat?

Well, please meet my often referred-to neighbor, Kelly Mathews. That animal she's holding is Chloe, my longtime feline friend.

Kelly is a great neighbor, for lots of reasons. Her family has lived next door for about 15 years. My wife and I would be heartbroken if they ever moved.

Kelly works for a credit union. I don't think I have ever met anyone who worked for a credit union that I did not like.

She has never minded that I offer Chloe snacks.

I once ran into Kelly at a fundraising luncheon. I mentioned to some women standing with her that Kelly was a great neighbor. She smiled and cheerfully suggested that she had no illusions about where she stood on the pecking order of those I cared about in her household.

Truth is, I like the whole family.
