The Slice

How do you note your “Arrived in Spokane” day?

At least a few of those who did not grow up here can tell you the date of their arrival in Spokane.

My anniversary, if you can call it that, is coming up. And I am wondering how to note the occasion. Something low-key certainly. But what?

I honestly cannot recall what, if anything, I have done in the past.

OK, the date of my first day here isn't really reflective of my literal first time in Spokane. The first was in the 1960s, when my family drove across the country to deposit my father in Tacoma, from where he would fly to a one-year Air Force posting in South Korea. It was summer.

We drove through Spokane on that trip.

And then, about six weeks before I arrived here to start work in the 1980s, I came for a job interview. That was in winter.

Of course, my "Spokane Arrival Day" is not the same date as my work anniversary.

But perhaps toasting Spokane and saying "Thank you" would suffice for either occasion.
