As Spokane prepares to once again host the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, lots of folks have ice skating on their minds. Some recall skating on frozen ponds or backyard rinks as children. Others have fond memories of their kids' first shaky steps on ice.

Many recall figure skating champions from the past, or eagerly anticipate watching the latest crop of champions when they compete in Spokane.

We've asked local civic leaders to answer five questions about ice skating. Here, Susan Meyer, CEO of Spokane Transit Authority, shares her thoughts.

Q. When was the last time you went ice skating?

A. "When my daughter was 9 or 10. That's been 20 years ago." Where? "At the Riverfront Park ice rink."

Q. Any favorite skating memories?

A. "Sadly, I only experience frustration on the ice. I'd watch the elegant skaters who made it look so effortless, and then go out and turn my ankles or fall on my fanny. Better to watch than to do!"

Q. Do you have a favorite figure skater?

A. Scott Hamilton. He's not just a great skater, he's a wonderful human being. He's faced significant adversity with grace and humility.

Q. What are you most looking forward to about the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships?

A. Everything! The electricity in the air around the competitions, visitors flocking to Spokane, the money spent with local businesses by the visitors flocking to Spokane.

Q. What do you want guests and/or the television audience to remember about Spokane?

A. It's beauty, our great facilities, and the generous friendly spirit of Spokanites. And of course, the fantastic bus service provided by Spokane Transit!
