FISHING -- With about two dozen spring chinook already running from the ocean, up the Columbia, into the Snake and over Lower Granite Dam, it's time for anglers to bone up on the 2016 salmon fishing seasons and rules adopted by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission in March.

Opening day for spring chinook in Idaho is April 23.

The basic rules follow

Rapid River Run

  • Daily Limit: 4 fish only 2 of which may be adults
  • Fishing will occur 7 days a week
  • Fishing will be allowed on the Salmon River from Rice Creek Bridge to Vinegar Creek and on the Little Salmon River from its mouth upstream to the HW 95 bridge near Smokey Boulder Road

Clearwater River Basin

  • Daily Limit: 4 fish only 1 of which may be an adult except in the South Fork Clearwater River where 2 adults can be harvested
  • Fishing will occur 7 days a week
  • No river sections closures, except the Big Eddy Hole will be closed to boat fishing.  This area will be marked by signs on the upstream and downstream boarders

Hells Canyon

  • Daily Limit: 4 fish only 2 of which may be adults
  • Fishing will occur 7 days a week
  • Fishing will be allowed from Dug Bar to Hells Canyon Dam

Season Limit:  20 adult Chinook Salmon in fisheries occurring prior to Sept. 1, 2016 .

Opening Day:  The season starts on Saturday April 23, 2016 and will remain open until further notice.

Note: these rules can change on short notice as fish managers monitor run size and the amount of harvest that has occurred.
