CdA Press airs new endorsement policy

In a recent editorial, the Coeur d'Alene Press announced a new way of handling endorsement letters that has some partisans upset. The two key points:

  • Only one candidate endorsement letter per writer, per election cycle is allowed. That means you can use 275 words to endorse one candidate, or as many candidates as you’d like — but you’re still limited to one 275-word letter.•
  • From now to the election, letters from candidates will not be published.

Full announcement here.

DFO: As a former managing editor and editorial writer, I've been on both sides of this issue. Campaigns using letters to the editor for free advertisements for their candidates. Also, prolific, partisan letter writers have an edge. I don't read endorsement letters to the editor. But I'm bothered by a practice that limits letters.

Question: What do you think?
