Fresh sushi in … Wallace?

From David Bond’s Facebook wall:

Sushi, fresh sushi, in Wallace, Idaho?

If that sounds a bit like catching a prime rib in the middle of the Atlantic off a small boat on a dry fly, you’d be about right.

But there it was, courtesy of the newly opened Blackboard Cafe here on Bank Street.

What was most impressive, beyond the impeccably and generously turned-out courses of Miso, tuna, eel and salmon and California rolls, the attentive but not obtrusive service, was that they were literally slammed by eager dine rs. Local diners. Reservations only. See, we don’t all live on cheeseburgers and fries here, Ben , at least not all the time if given the choice. We’ve had some other great meals there, too.

The local turnout was a good sign. Who knew there were many fish-eaters up here in the Bitterroots? It means they may well survive through the tourist season into the fall and spring doldrums. We’ve had our share of tourism-based businesses who go bust during the months when the weather turns (bad).

I wish my best to this young couple and certainly will be back.

DFO: I’m not a sushi fan. How about you?
