My 2 Cents: All those who helped incumbent Ron Edinger and candidate Dan English tromp two conservative hardliners for Coeur d'Alene City Council seats Tuesday deserve to take a bow. And to take a breather. But the work isn't finished. We need to figure out how to elect partisan legislative representatives who reflect our values.
In Tuesday's Poll, a whopping 68.9% of Hucks Nation said they had voted or planned to vote in a city and/or highway district election Tuesday. That's an incredible number when you consider some weren't eligible to vote -- and less than 20% of the eligible voters countywide voted. Sandpoint voters approved a 1 percent sales tax increase to rebuild Barlow Stadium at War Memorial Field. The measure passed with 75 percent of the vote. Officials hope it will raise $3 million in the next 5 years. Also, Sandpoint voters elected mayoral candidate subject to hate robo-calls -- Shelby Rognstad.
Voters chose to retain incumbent Councilman Joe Malloy Tuesday night with nearly 59 percent of the vote over former Mayor Clay Larkin. “I did everything I could, so win or lose, I could sleep at night,” Malloy said, adding he was grateful the campaign remained positive and professional.
Longtime Coeur d'Alene City Councilman Ron Edinger opened up a massive early lead in Tuesday's election and never let up. Edinger received 3,131 votes — 66 percent of the total — to challenger Toby Schindelbeck's 1,559 votes. Groused Schindelbeck afterward: "People deserve the government that they vote for."
Former Kootenai County Clerk Dan English took down incumbent Coeur d'Alene City Councilman Steve Adams in Tuesday's election. In unofficial results, English got 2,645 votes for 56 percent of the total. Adams received 1,802 votes and 38 percent. Bruce MacNeil, another challenger, received 263 votes.
