Wild Card/Thursday — 7.23.15

Sometimes, when I see Brooks Seaplane taking off or landing on Lake Coeur d'Alene (as I have twice this work week already), I recall how much the plane annoyed mining magnate Harry Magnuson during his later years. Among his many assets, Harry had a waterfront home in the Casco Bay area. The seaplane was pointed at his digs when it took off, shattering Harry's tranquility. Once or twice, he called me to complain. There really wasn't much he could do about the noise. Bill Brooks had been flying his plane from City Beach since the 1940s. It remains an integral part of our summer waterfront today. And I, as well as many of you, still enjoy watching it shuttle sight seers over the lake. Here's today's Wild Card ...
