At Old School North Idaho (Facebook), Heather Heber Callahan has prompted discussion with a post re: proper pronunciation of Coeur d'Alene. The photo above was taken from a 1937 Special Edition of the Coeur d'Alene Press celebrating Coeur d'Alene's Golden Anniversary. In the comments section below, Stephen Sheppard writes: "The French pronunciation is the kur-da-lane shown in the newspaper scan, and since that is the source of the name - French speaking trappers moving through the area - it makes more sense to pronounce it with that 'flair.' I was raised to pronounce it this way, and was told that the pronunciation largely changed when there was an influx of transplanted mid-westerners during the depression from the dust-bowl states, and that the local radio station had a lot to do with the change. My grandparents on both sides moved to the area in the early part of the last century and both sides pronounced it with the French pronunciation."
