Counting Out Change

I just returned from the Coeur d'Alene post office, where the clerk handed back my change from a $20 bill the old-fashioned way. She counted it back to me starting with the coins. The purchase was for $5.70. So 30 cents made $6, then 4 ones made $10 and two $5s made $20. I told her how much I appreciated the way she counted the money back. I did that decades ago while clerking at a supermarket during my high school and early college days. But too often -- always? -- today, the clerk simply hands you the money and expects you to take his/her word that he/she counted correctly.

Question: Am I being anal retentive here? Or should store/restaurant/fast food clerks count your change back the old-fashioned way?
