DFO: Community Good Above All

I've learned long ago on this blog that few readers here are 100 percent partisan. Even the most conservative have an undercurrent or two that could be considered liberal. And vice versa. Many of us here agree on most things despite our political filter. More than anything, my interaction here and during my 13 years on The Spokesman-Review editorial board has prompted me to reconsider dug-in positions of the past. Partisan politics, for example, mean little or nothing to me, although I still consider myself center-right. The good of the community and state of Idaho mean more to me than ideology. That's why I opposed the wrong-headed attempted recall of Coeur d'Alene Mayor Sandi Bloem and three quality council members. On the one side, we had four individuals who have supported one important project after another (Coeur d'Alene Library, Kroc Center, Education Corridor, Centennial/Prairie Trail expansion). On the other side, we had a concentration of the same ideologues who regularly oppose improvements in Coeur d'Alene, including the purchase of the old DeArmond Mill for the Education Corridor. I will support candidates with a vision who understand the importance of getting things done now for future generations. I will not support candidates who look at all the progress along the Coeur d'Alene waterfront and throughout the urban renewal district and sniff derisively at the word "progress" (as they've been trained to do by their partisan handlers). We face another election in the battle for Coeur d'Alene's soul. Those who want to shut this community down have made in-roads on the City Council & Coeur d'Alene School Board. They are now targeting the North Idaho College Board of Trustees. It's time to quit voting straight ticket. It's time to hold incumbent legislators accountable for supporting silly ideas like Tom Luna's wrecking-ball education reform. It's time to demand that candidates provide a concrete vision re: how they would improve Lake City and the surrounding towns and county rather than how conservative or anti-tax they are -- DFO.
