Did Gookin Say ‘Cupcake’ Or Not?

On Thursday morning, an occasional HBO commenter named Pip wrote: "I thought you were supposed to be a news man. If so, you should know to check your 'facts.' Gookin has never called Christie Wood 'Sergeant Cupcake,' and she knows it. Someone else did, but it wasn't Gookin." I didn't think much about that comment -- other than it indirectly called me a "jackass" at the end -- until Dan Gookin sent a letter to the SR opinion page today, also denying he'd ever used the "Sgt. Cupcake" reference verbally or in print. Quoth: "It is wrong for Mr. Oliveria to continue to misrepresent me, as it is for Ms. Wood to fail to acknowledge the mistake on his blog." Well, HBO researchers came up with Gookin's reference to "Sgt. Cupcake" in a post from May 15, 2007 (in Coeur d'Alene Press online section). I quote in part: "For months they've referred to Congressman Bill Sali as a "turd" -- or worse. That's their right, of course. But I call Sergeant Cupcake a 'snake' and the chest beating, projectile sweating, and chorus of self-important harumps is deafening!" Gookin also referred to me as DOF throughout. Which I don't think was an endearing term. Any other questions?
