ORG XMIT: XSI102 A flock of Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus) gather over sheep corpse in a canyon of the Uvac river, some 220 kilometers (138 miles) south of Belgrade, Sunday, March 1, 2009. The Griffon vulture, is the largest bird living in Serbia, and is a rare species of vulture eagle, with an impressive size and a wingspan of up to three meters . The average weight of a bird ranges between 8 and 9 kilograms, some individuals can weigh 11 kilograms. They mainly nesting on limestone rocks and do it in groups creating colonies. The Uvac special nature reserve which is under the protection of state, is one of the best environments for reintroduction and recolonization of the endangered species. The number of griffon vultures has increased to 67 nesting couples, and estimates some 300 individuals, and it's colony of this unique bird species became the largest one in the Balkans, and among the largest in Europe.
