Cycling U.S. 101 in San Diego County

San Diego is the nation's eighth largest city, with clogged freeways that are getting more clogged by the day.

But along the coast, a much more beautiful way to get around awaits bicyclists. U.S. 101 travels through some of San Diego County's most attractive communities, including Torrey Pines, Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas.

You can make that trip easily on a bicycle, thanks to recreation paths and some very safe bike lanes. It's a fantastic way to experience the northern section of San Diego County.

We camped at San Elijo State Park in Cardiff By The Sea, a community in Encinitas. From there, it's an easy ride to downtown Encinitas, a beautiful coastal town filled with shops and coastal restaurants.

Best of all, bicycling along the coast offers you views of some of the most beautiful beaches in California, something frustrated drivers just can't appreciate.
