3 Oregon State parks that are awesome to visit this autumn
For RV travelers, fall is one of the best times to be out on the road. The summer crowds have gone home, and the weather is often crisp and clear.
We're really enjoying exploring some sweet spots in Oregon, where we have our pick of wonderful sites. And big bonus: Most Oregon state parks have full hookup sites, and also provide free showers to visitors. That's something we've really appreciated since our water heater is on the fritz! (Oh, the sometimes painful reality of owning a tiny home on wheels.)
Here are a few of our favorite campgrounds in Oregon:
Located on the south end of a gorgeous glacial lake, this sprawling campground also enjoys views that require looking way up at 8,000-foot peaks. You can take all sorts of days hikes from a nearby trailhead, or spend quality time shopping and dining in adorable Joseph, six miles down the road. For maximum privacy, we liked the E loop.
Carl G. Washburn Memorial State Park
On a dramatic stretch of the coast on the east side of Highway 101, this popular destination offers a wide variety of sites, tucked up on a hillside, or down on the flats, where there are trails out to the beach. This one of extra special because it was the last time we tent camped before buying our RV, and the walk-in sites were in an old-growth forest that looked as if it was a set from The Hobbit. We cooked a memorable meal down the road, near Heceta Head lighthouse. While in that area, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is also well-worth exploring.
Sure, there's often a stiff wind blowing, but the vast beaches near this rustic park are often completely deserted. Grab a coat and an adult beverage and hit the sand for a beautiful sunset happy hour. If you are an oyster fan, be sure and hit up Nevør Shellfish Farm just south of Tillamook.
