Going Mobile

Discover Maui in a different way - in an RV

You want to see Maui in a different way? Try renting a RV.

That's what we did last spring when we traveled around the island in a VW campervan that we rented on the website Outdoorsy. I wrote about it in a story published last month in the Los Angeles Times.

Two of the very best places to camp out on Maui are near the town of Hana. We stayed one night at Waianapanapa State Park and two nights in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park. Staying in a campervan in these gorgeous hangouts offers several advantages:

  • It's affordable: The cost of overnight rentals can be as cheap as $60.
  • Beach access: You can stay in two of the nicest and remote coastal areas of Maui.
  • It's fun: We rented a 1975 VW campervan called "Gypsea." The old-school ride got some appreciative looks everywhere we went and offered a comfortable hangout.

When you head to Maui to escape the Spokane winter, think about going mobile -- in a campervan.
