If you want to be a rock star — but suffer from stage fright — you should check out this gig

Tricia Jo Webster

The Credit Unions of Washington are looking for 121 local musicians to play in a huge lunchtime show called “The Rock Cooperative” in Riverfront Park on September 21.

Sharing the stage with 120 other musicians means you can claim playing to a live audience without having to be the center of attention … so … your street cred can go up by 300 points while your blood pressure rests comfortably at 120/80. Best of both worlds, baby!

Small-group auditions for The Rock Cooperative will go down on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Riverfront Park. You’re welcome to audition with a group of friends, or go solo. If you’re interested, send an email to: auditions@therockcooperative.com. List which instruments you play or any special talents you may have, and they will respond with exact time/location info. Organizers are looking for all kinds of musicians, but really hope to hear from acoustic guitar players, hand percussionists and background vocalists.

Hand percussionists? Is this a fancy way of saying “clappers”? Blowing dust off the banjo that’s been sitting in my closet for more than 5 years is about as close to playing a musical instrument as I get. But if they need a superior hand clapper, I might just need to get myself to those auditions. You can also send in a video clip — click here for more details on that.

And, in case you’re wondering about the whole credit union/rock band connection (I know I was) … CU of Washington likes to host events for the communities they serve. (Click here to check out what they put together last year … ) This year, each band member represents one of the credit unions in Washington state. So very clever. So very cool.
