Down To Earth

“Tim Eyman is like herpes.”

Well, the election results are in. While I refrained from discussing particular candidates I couldn't keep quiet about that poison that is I-1125. Neither could Democratic State Party Chair Dwight Pelz.

Last night at Fado Pub, where the No on I-1125 gang gathered, he declared: "Tim Eyman is like herpes. Just when you think it's gone, it comes back." Of course, everybody wondered if he was speaking from personal experience.

"Do I develop a rash every time another Eyman initiative comes on the ballot?" Pelz asked, re-framing the question. "Yes."

For Eyman's part, he is now on his 15th initiative in 15 years and there are no plans to stop. “This is my calling,” he said. “This is what I was meant to do.”

I guess that means there isn't a cure.

I was surprised Spokane County voters reacted as negatively to this initiative as they did. It was a jump to see what a tolling initiative meant for us but if the tolling couldn't be used to fund huge projects like the 520 bridge or the tunnel that means they will pull in more state and federal transportation dollars. If that occured, it would've been harder for other transportation projects to get matching funds- especially in Spokane. Goodbye Central City Line or future light rail. Or even the North-South Corridor.

There are still ballots to count but if this passed Washington would've got what they deserved - a horrible transportation system. I'm proud we thought otherwise.
