Down To Earth

Education of an Urban Farmer

There's a part of all of us that strives for a simpler life - for some the calling is easier to adhere to, for others, it's an often forgotten New Year's resolution.  But it's there, and we have it ingrained in us to pursue that lifestyle, and to succeed in that lifestyle.  Novella Carpenter, a self-proclaimed renegade and urban squatter definitely falls into the former.  The freelance journalist, blogger, urban farmer, gardener, and horticulturist, student of "playing at self-sufficiency", and now published author, will be in Spokane next week promoting her book, "Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer".

Carpenter's visit is a Main Market Co-op event as part of National Co-op Month, and there are three events associated with her visit.  But before you learn about ways to experience Novella Carpenter, take a few minutes to read a wonderful interview of Carpenter that appears in the current issue of Out There Monthly.

First, on Tuesday, October 20th from 5:30 to 7 p.m.at Sante Restaurant & Charcuterie, Chef Jeremy Hansen and the Sante team will host a fundraising event for Main Market Co-op where he and visiting chef Jim Barret will serve rabbit prepared several ways, as Novella introduces the concept of rabbit as the "new chicken."  Cost of this event is $40.

Following dinner, around 7 p.m. Novella will head upstairs to Auntie's where she will share stories and photos of her experience as an Urban Farmer. Auntie's will be donating 10% of Farm City book sales this evening to Main Market Co-op.

Finally, on Wednesday, October 21st 9:15 a.m. at Spokane Community College's Hagan Center, Novella will once again speak about her book and her adventures.
