Down To Earth

Friday Quote - Urban agriculture

"The Science Barge is an urban sustainable farm, to show that we can grow food quite easily, quite inexpensively, using only alternative energies in an urban setting - the whole idea of urban agriculture is to get the people to think about where there food comes from and to think about the idea that cities can be farm areas as well, and produce lots of food." - Curt Collier, Deputy Director of Grown

Living in Spokane and the Inland Northwest, the idea of farming and agriculture is anything but foreign.  Any aware consumer is at the very least conscious of the process by which food reaches their plate. It's hard to drive any direction out of Spokane without getting a full helping of agriculture reality.  But what about folks living in strictly urban areas?  Without the exposure and the understanding of food sources, they are less likely to be educated, aware, or interested in the process, and thus less likely to make healthy and sustainable food decisions.  Take a look at the following video about what a group is doing in New York City.  It's an amazing look at solution-based and creative education.
