Support the Spokane Farmers Market

As you may or may not be aware of, this summer has brought about major changes to area farmers' markets.  In June, it was reported that the Department of Revenue of the State of Washington was taking action against churches that were holding Farmers’ Markets in their parking lots, removing the non-profit exempt status of those pieces of property being used by the market - ultimately making them decide on paying the tax on the land, or stop running the markets.

Imagining communities without farmers' markets is a frightening thought, and this action by the Department of Revenue is dangerously close to making that a reality for some.  There are ways to help secure that farmers' markets remain an important part of connecting local people around local food and commerce.

Next Tuesday (August 11th) the Spokane Farmers' Market will host a fundraiser called Feast with the Farms 2009 to raise funds to benefit Spokane Farmers' Market programs & operations, and pay for the newly assigned property tax.  Tickets to the event are $40 which includes an open bar, hosted by Dry Fly, Northern Lights and Caterina Winery; A full course dinner from Feast Catering which will serve a dinner of locally available, seasonal foods (vegan entree upon request); Live music, plus a silent & live auction.
