Substitute motion to OK school science standards as presented fails, 5-11

Rep. John McCrostie, D-Boise, offered a substitute motion to approve the school science standards as presented.  “The reason why I make this motion is based on hearing from so many science teachers from my area, from across the state, and in respect for the diligent hard work of the science standards review committee,” he said. “There have been thousand of hours that have been put into this process. It’s been very transparent. There have been hordes of opportunities to step in, if there was a concern about whether the supporting content should have been adopted or not, there were numerous opportunities besides this very last opportunity.”

His motion failed on a 5-11 vote. Those voting in favor were Reps. McDonald, Amador, Chilcote(Kloc), McCrostie and Toone. Those voting “no” were Reps. Shepherd, Boyle, Clow, Mendive, Kerby, Cheatham, DeMordaunt, Moon, Syme, Ehardt and VanOrden. The committee is now debating Syme’s original motion, which would delete one section of the standards plus all of its “supporting content.”
