Debate: ‘Would like this bill to be twice as much’

In further debate on tax cuts in the House:

Rep. Karey Hanks, R-St. Anthony, said, “I will vote for this bill, but I hope this is just a starting point.”

Rep. Jeff Thompson, R-Idaho Falls, said, “I will be supporting this bill. I would just like this bill to be twice as much. … I would like us to consider coming back with the same type of bill, but also having in that bill the elimination of the grocery tax credit.”

Rep. Paulette Jordan, D-Plummer, said, “Idaho’s rural school districts are in dire condition. … I do not feel this bill solves that problem.”

In his closing debate, House Majority Leader Mike Moyle said, “It’s cheaper to be in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming.” He said Idaho's been improving its schools, and he also said the state's universities have big financial reserves. Moyle said, "This doesn't harm education. There's a way to do both. ... You've gotta help the guy back who's paying the bill. We should've been doing this all along. This is not a bad bill, this is good tax policy."
