Marley: ‘We are saddened but we are not disheartened’

Idaho Democratic Party Chairman Bert Marley issued this statement on the election results:

“The Idaho Democratic Party would like to thank the hundreds of thousands of Idahoans who supported our candidates this year. We are proud of the work that we have accomplished together and we are grateful for the many conversations we have had with our fellow Idahoans. The outcome of the election has made this a sad day for Idaho Democrats who worked so long and hard. We are so inspired by the work of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the determination of our candidates.

“Today we are saddened but we are not disheartened. We will continue to work to elect reasonable, responsible Idaho Democrats who put families, workers, businesses and communities first. We note that all of Idaho has lost tremendous public servants such as Sen. Dan Schmidt of Moscow and Rep. John Rusche of Lewiston. These courageous, compassionate physicians will be sorely missed in the Legislature. The people who replaced them have large shoes to fill.

“For our country’s sake, we wish President-elect Trump good luck. To both Republican and Democratic winners in Idaho, we offer our congratulations. For those who wonder where the Idaho Democratic Party goes from here, I assure you that we will continue on a path toward growth. We will continue to champion regular Idahoans, families, workers, communities, and businesses.

“Just as you saw us do on Election Day, when we battled in federal court to keep polling places open so more voters could vote, you will continue to see us fight for democracy. You will see the Idaho Democratic Party continue pushing for Idaho election officials to stop discouraging college students from exercising their rights to vote. You will see the Idaho Democratic Party continue to battle against bullies who would intimidate our grandmothers in grocery store parking lots over political views.

“You will see the Idaho Democratic Party holding Republican candidates and others accountable for breaking campaign finance laws. And, importantly, you will see the Idaho Democratic Party continue to attract the most talented and committed public servants to run for elected office – and we will work to make sure every Idaho voter knows these are the candidates who put Idaho first. Thank you, Idaho.“
