Seiniger withdraws from Idaho Supreme Court race

Boise attorney William "Breck" Seiniger has withdrawn from the race for the Idaho Supreme Court, the second candidate to do so; that makes what was initially a six-way race now a four-way contest. Seiniger said "a number of well-qualified candidates" have joined the race since he first filed. Here's his full statement:

“I was the first to declare for the seat being vacated by Justice Jim Jones.  I filed close to the deadline because I was concerned that no other candidate had stepped forward whom I believed would have the independence and sense of justice to tackle the issue that I believe should be of primary concern to voters: the increasingly hyper-technical focus on pre-trial procedural rules to the detriment of resolution of disputes based on all available relevant evidence and the merits.  This trend goes to the heart of the Idaho citizen’s right to a jury trial.  The practical effect of this disturbing trend is that the outcome of too many cases is determined by narrow technical procedural rulings that often ignore those cases’ merits.  Over the course of my 35 plus years of practice as an Idaho attorney, this increasing trend has clogged the system, increased the cost of litigation, and contributed to delay.

Since I filed my declaration, a number of well-qualified candidates have stepped forward whom I am hopeful recognize this problem and are capable of conscientiously addressing it if elected.  As such, I have reconsidered my candidacy and notified the Idaho Secretary of State that I have withdrawn from the race.”
