Travel guide publisher settles case over false claims of affiliation with state
A publishing company that operates under the name “The Idaho Travel Council” has reached a settlement with Attorney General Lawrence Wasden over allegedly misrepresenting itself as affiliated with the Idaho Department of Commerce and other state agencies. The group agreed to disclose on its website and in ads that it’s a private commercial business unrelated to the state of Idaho; it publishes travel and recreation guides.
Wasden said his office complaints were filed with the Department of Commerce after people reported receiving unsolicited phone calls selling advertising for what was claimed to be the state’s official travel guide. “Simply, it’s unlawful for a private business to misrepresent its relationship with government, or that the Attorney General, or any other government agency, in some way endorses or supports that business,” Wasden said.
Wasden alleged the solicitations misled consumers and that the company was making telemarketing calls without being registered to do so in the state. The company has now applied for registration, and also agreed to pay $500 to cover the Attorney General’s legal and investigation costs.
