House backs bill to authorize ‘benefit corporations,’ sends to governor
Here’s a news item from the Associated Press: BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A bill that would let Idaho corporations pursue societal and environmental causes is headed to the governor's desk. House lawmakers unanimously endorsed the plan Tuesday. Currently, Idaho corporations risk a lawsuit if they make business decisions based on anything but maximizing profits for their shareholders. House Minority Leader John Rusche asked whether the new category would lead to special tax treatment. But Republican Rep. Neil Anderson from Blackfoot says that the businesses will still be under for-profit corporation tax rules. More than 25 states have created a similar category — including neighboring Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The Senate unanimously endorsed the plan earlier this session.
