Teen tanning bill passes House, 47-23

It was a bit anticlimactic after the big fights in past years, but the House has easily passed HB 177, the bill to require parental consent for teens under 18 to use artificial tanning beds, and banning their use for those age 13 and younger. The bill passed 47-23, and now moves to the Senate side. House Health & Welfare Chairman Fred Wood, R-Burley, a physician, told the House that the tanning beds pose serious dangers to youngsters’ skin and can cause skin cancer. Farther-reaching bills to limit teens from artificial tanning failed in 2012 and 2013. This year’s bill imposes the same limits on youngsters’ use of artificial tanning beds that Idaho already has for tattoos and piercings.
